Dem ad says Snyder has ‘failed record on jobs and economic growth’

The Democratic Governors Association this morning unveiled a new web ad which claims Gov. Rick Snyder has established a track record of economic failure.

“Rick Snyder has consistently rewarded the wealthiest and well-connected at the expense of Michigan’s seniors, students, and middle-class families,” said Democratic Governors Association spokesman Danny Kanner. “At the same time, he refuses to be straight about his failed record on jobs and economic growth. It’s well past time for Snyder to stop playing political games and to go to bat for the middle class.”

You can watch the 60-second DGA web ad, titled “Strikeout,” HERE.

Or, here is the script with accompanying back-up material supplied by the DGA:

50,000 OF THOSE JOBS WERE CREATED BEFORE SNYDER TOOK OFFICE

Total Private Sector Job Growth: Michigan Private Sector Job Growth January 2011 – July 2013: 199,800 [BLS, Total Private State Employment January 2011-July 2013, accessed 9/9/13]

Michigan Private Sector Job Growth January 2010 – December 2010 (Granholm): 75,600 [BLS, Total Private State Employment 2010-July 2013, accessed9/9/13]

Difference Between Private Sector Jobs Created Under Snyder and What He Claimed: 50,200 [WNDU, 8/5/13; BLS, Total Private State Employment January 2011-July 2013, accessed 9/9/13]

2012: “If Governor Snyder deserves credit for Michigan's economic recovery, so does Jennifer Granholm.” Yes, the economy is picking up steam under Snyder. But if you believe that governors control such things, credit also must be given to Snyder’s predecessor, Gov. Jennifer Granholm, at least in her final year in office. Let’s also not forget President Barack Obama’s bailout of General Motors and Chrysler, which set the stage for an auto-led recovery of Michigan’s economy…But according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth under Snyder has slowed a bit compared to the last year of Granholm’s tenure. Michigan added 88,300 payroll jobs from December 2009 to January 2011, the month Snyder took office. Since then, Michigan has gained 71,200 jobs.” [Mlive.com5/27/12]

NOT TO MENTION

SNYDER COUNTS JOBS CREATED THANKS TO OBAMA’S RESCUE OF THE AUTO INDUSTRY

STRIKE!
(00:18 - 00:26)
2011: “Michigan Surpassing 48 States Shows Autos Drive U.S. Recovery.” “Michigan’s economy is recovering from the recession at the second-fastest pace in the U.S., lifted by reviving carmakers and local manufacturers, according to a new Bloomberg index that tracks the pace of state growth. The home to the U.S. automobile industry was topped only by North Dakota, where an oil boom is raising incomes and boosting government coffers at the nation’s quickest rate…The index shows how rising demand for manufactured goods from countries including China are driving the recovery throughout the Midwest. Illinois, Ohio and Minnesota joined Michigan on the list of the 10 best-performing states.” [Bloomberg Businessweek, 11/2/11]

Michigan Ranked 2nd in Nation in Economic Recovery Due to Carmakers and Manufactures. “A Bloomberg Economic Evaluation of States report issued Wednesday reveals that Michigan’s economy is recovering at the second-fastest pace in the country – trailing only North Dakota – with growth attributed to carmakers and local manufacturers. The Bloomberg analysis, which Snyder said is the first of its kind, looks at personal income, tax revenue, employment, housing prices and other indicators, based on information from 2008 through the present.” [Mlive.com11/2/11]

Snyder Said He Would Not Take Credit for Ranking… “Snyder, speaking on a conference call from Ottawa, Canada, said he's not taking – or giving – credit to anyone for the ranking, saying it came from a number of changes and factors over a period of time.” [Mlive.com11/2/11]

…But Then Took Credit for Budget Playing Role in the Recovery. “But he said lowering businesses taxes, eliminating the Michigan Business Tax and removing other barriers to growth played a role. The state's budget provides fiscal stability, eliminating one-time fixes and overspending, ‘paid down future liabilities and sends a strong signal to job providers that Michigan is open for business.’” [Mlive.com11/2/11
