Non-essential? Congress still enjoys gym, spa, sauna

As the shutdown enters Day 10, the gym, spa and sauna for members of Congress remains open while "non-essential" services are shuttered.
Two House members want the Capitol Hill facilities closed until the shutdown impasse is over, according to Think Progress.
Democratic Reps. Bill Foster of Illinois and Patrick Murphy of Florida are circulating a letter that asks House Speaker John Boehner to halt these perks and deem the House gym non-essential for the duration of the shutdown.

Think Progress reported that Capitol Hill has two separate gym facilities for the House and Senate. Each features a swimming pool, basketball courts, paddleball courts, a sauna, a steam room and flat screen TVs. While towel service is unavailable, taxpayers remain on the hook for cleaning and maintenance, which has been performed daily throughout the shutdown. There are also costs associated with the power required to heat the pools and keep the lights on.
“Not only are members still able to access the taxpayer-funded gym, sauna and steam room while tens of thousands of federal employees remain furloughed, janitorial staff are still required to clean the gym and restock it with towels and other ‘essential items,’” Murphy and Foster wrote in the letter.

According to Politico, the two congressman have to introduce the Shutdown Prioritization Act, or SPA, that would prohibit the Architect of the Capitol from keeping the congressional gym open.
