Thanks to the Independent Voters Network for digging up this George Washington quote at a time when voter disdain for the two parties, Democrats and Republicans, is reaching new heights. It’s no secret that many of the Founders feared the rise of powerful political parties that would dominate and corrupt the government.
Washington said:
“…they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.”
