Macomb guys can’t handle those Dutch names

When the Macomb County Board of Commissioners took action on Thursday to pass a proclamation for a retiring teachers’ union official, Finance Committee Chairman Fred Miller was quickly corrected on his pronunciation.
Miller told the committee that the agenda item was a tribute to Dan Hoekenga – “Ho –KENG –a.”
Commissioner Kathy (Schutte) Vosburg quickly intervened.
“Mr. Chairman, in Western Michigan, a good Dutch name like that is pronounced ‘HOO-keng-a,’” explained Vosburg, who is of Dutch descent.

Miller, confused over the correction and his failure to put the emphasis on the first syllable, eventually told the committee “Can we please have a motion to approve the proclamation for THAT GUY?” Laughter ensued and the proclamation was passed.

What do you expect from a guy who’s gone through life with the name Miller?
