NRA's LaPierre: 'Buy more guns than ever'

NRA spokesman Wayne LaPierre, determined to scare up more support for his group, comes out with guns blazing in a guest column – a rant – he wrote for The Daily Caller.
Taking a shotgun approach, LaPierre’s engagement in doomsday scenarios, even conspiracy theories, will truly frighten the liberals who favor President Obama’s gun control proposals and more. And I suspect some of the more passive NRA members may cringe at this barrage of hyperbole.

LaPierre wrote that the millions of Americans rushing to buy more firearms in recent weeks are not preparing for a bloody attack on gun owners launched by federal authorities. But they are survivalists, he wrote, they are preparing for a future Armageddon.
The cause of this upcoming mayhem? Who knows? It could be the Mexicans. Or the terrorists. Or even Mother Nature. But when it comes, Obama will seize the opportunity and take away Americans’ guns, according to LaPierre.

Here’s a taste of this paranoia:
“…President Obama is leading this country to financial ruin, borrowing over a trillion dollars a year for phony ‘stimulus’ spending and other payoffs for his political cronies. Nobody knows if or when the fiscal collapse will come, but if the country is broke, there likely won’t be enough money to pay for police protection. And the American people know it.
“Hurricanes. Tornadoes. Riots. Terrorists. Gangs. Lone criminals. These are perils we are sure to face -- not just maybe. It’s not paranoia to buy a gun. It’s survival. It’s responsible behavior, and it’s time we encourage law-abiding Americans to do just that.”

In LaPierre’s mind, the Mexican drug cartels are the greatest threat to Americans, more specifically to NRA members.

Here’s his warning:
“During the second Obama term, however, additional threats are growing. Latin American drug gangs have invaded every city of significant size in the United States. Phoenix is already one of the kidnapping capitals of the world, and though the states on the U.S./Mexico border may be the first places in the nation to suffer from cartel violence, by no means are they the last.
"So the border today remains porous not only to people seeking jobs in the U.S., but to criminals whose jobs are murder, rape, robbery and kidnapping. Ominously, the border also remains open to agents of al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations. Numerous intelligence sources have confirmed that foreign terrorists have identified the southern U.S. border as their path of entry into the country.”

He also cautions that a mass murder – maybe committed by “some psychotic who should have been locked up long ago” – will lead to a flood of gun control measures. Where did that come from? We have mass murders in America on a monthly basis. Has LaPierre not noticed that, even in the wake of the horrific slaughter of children at Sandy Hook by a psychotic, Congress appears wary of all the gun restrictions before them, even provisions that are popular with the public?

The Daily Caller shamelessly lets LaPierre use their website for an NRA sales pitch. First, the NRA vice president asks for donations to pay for political ads. He suggests $20, $50, $250 or $1,000.
He also refers to the NRA as the largest civil rights organization in the world” and urges members to recruit new members for their “army of freedom.”

His conclusion:  “We will not surrender. We will not appease. We will buy more guns than ever.”
