Are Republicans ready to embrace gays?

We’ve come so far, so fast as a nation on the issue of gay rights and same-sex marriage that historians will certainly take note.
How far? How fast? Well, a TV ad making its debut today features prominent political figures speaking out in favor of marriage rights for same-sex couples – and the video clips within the spot focus on Republicans who have crossed over.

According to CNN, the $1 million ad campaign was created by the Respect for Marriage Coalition. The commercial relies upon clips of former Vice President Dick Cheney, former first lady Laura Bush, and former Secretary of State Colin Powell all voicing their support for same-sex marriage rights. All this just eight years after Bush’s husband used an anti-gay marriage campaign in Ohio to seal his re-election as president.
"None of us would want to be told we can't marry the person we love," a narrator says introducing the clips. "That's why a growing majority of Americans believe it's time to allow marriage for gay and lesbian couples."
