Calif. GOP creates fake Obamacare website

Republican members of the California State Assembly have stooped to the level of fraudsters and identity thieves by directing their constituents to a fake Obamacare website that offers misleading information about the health care exchange.
The official-looking site, known as CoveringHealthCareCA.com, is promoted in mailers (apparently created and sent with tax dollars) that are tied to certain GOP assemblymen.
The liberal site Crooks and Liars spotted the effort on Monday and obtained one of the flyers.

The cover of these mailers – labeled as a “resource guide” -- feature the photo of  a perplexed woman (above) and they urge people to go to the sight to “help you navigate” the changes in health care law. But the site is filled with GOP spin and, instead of offering basic information about premiums and costs, it tells people how to calculate the federal penalty they will pay if they don’t purchase insurance.
The flyer does make reference to the real online exchange, Covered California, but not the web address, CoveredCA.com, which is shaping up as one of the most successful state marketplaces in the nation under the Affordable Care Act.

At The Wire, they note that there have been  past attempts by fraudsters who created fake Obamacare sites to trick people into turning over personal financial information.
In this case, the Republican deception is clearly intended to score political points and sabotage the ACA. And, of course, everyone who visits the pseudo-site will be receiving solicitations for donations to the GOP over the next several months.
